Electronic Press Kits (EPKs)

EPKs what are they? Why have one? Who will see them? These are the questions asked by many of today’s young, independent artist, and I am here to answer them.

What is an EPK? An EPK is essential for today’s independent artist. It is an online, electronic version of your online media, marketing portfolio, in other words, your resume. In your EPK, you should always include your biography, or “bio” for short. What is a bio? That’s a couple of written paragraphs that tell our story. Who you are as an artist, (you should always start with your name, artist name, and age if you’d like to disclose that) where you come from, how you started in the music industry, what’s your music genre, how long have you been in the music industry, where have you performed, whom have you performed with, your lasted achievements, your latest music, or singles, etc., all of this information should be included in your bio. You should also include music videos in your EPK; along with important release dates; what you can contribute to this music industry; information on where to find your merchandise, if you have any; professional photographs emphasizing your style; any articles and reviews you may have done with music industry, experts; career highlights; all of your social media links; and most important your contact information.

Why do you need an EPK? Most artists spend their time in the studio making music and later doing nothing with the music they’ve created. By having an EPK in place, the artist is able to better market who they are as an artist, their music links, specific details of their accomplishments and more. Additionally, after a live performance, if an industry expert or reporter is interested in your music and enjoyed your performance, you can direct them to your EPK link for further information about you. Like I said, an EPK is your resume, or like an extended, online business card.

Who will see your EPK? If you’re interested in getting signed to a record label, most record labels would not even consider you if you did not have an EPK in place. In addition to music labels, music journalist, music managers, publicist, venue talent search, music supervisors, music bloggers, and music website submissions are all industry experts who will insist you have an EPK in place to showcase your talent and provide them with further information about your music career.

So there you have it, 3 important reasons why an EPK is important for your music career. In order for an artist to advocate work, it is critical for them to present themselves professionally, and it starts with providing an EPK.
